People and places are established.  Histories and relationships are explored.  But the book turns dark and gloomy as the Nazis blitz across Poland and the Jews of Warsaw and forced in a walled ghetto.  The evil and depravity of the Nazis (and their Polish and Jewish co-conspirators) is impossible to comprehend. If you haven't tried ice-blocking, it's hard to explain just how fun it is.  Basically, you get a huge block of ice (I think they run 10 pounds or so), you find a nice long, grassy hill (golf courses work well), and you ride the ice block down the hill the same way you would a sled on snow. We have good things in life in the midst of crises.  And we have unbearable adversity in the midst of great joy.  Someone dies and within days a child is born.
